On Tuesday Swedish activist Greta Thunberg joined at least 15,000 other demonstrators near the town of Lutzerath Germany. The protest was against a west German coal mine that is looking to expand its operations and in the process a small village is slated to be demolished to make away for progress.

The German people are considering this a pivotal moment in their battle against climate change and sentiment against the expansion of the Garzweiler coal mine is growing daily. The Garzweiler mine is located in the German state of North Rhine Westfalia. It is a pit mining operation which has become unpopular all around the world because of its complete destruction of the surrounding landscape.

The village of Lutzerath was approved to be demolished about a decade ago and ever since then it has been a rallying point for protesters against climate change. Although the town was once home to 100 residents, it is now abandoned and protesters have occupied some of the buildings.

Last week a court ruled that the squatters should be evicted and the village should be demolished, but the protests only seem to be growing in intensity.

The type of coal mined at the guards wheeler mine is responsible for about 20% of Germany’s carbon emissions.

Even though close to 50 villages have been bulldozed to make away for these expanding mines in Germany already, protesters seem to be drawing the line here!

Whether their efforts bear fruit is yet to be seen.
